I'm interested in learning more about the hindu lifestyle. There is so much to read online I'm not sure where to start. What I have read seems ideal for me but I'm a bit overwhelmed I guess. This is the second time in my life I've been drawn to Hinduism, I'm eager to find out why. Any guidance would be appreciated.
The best look at our lifestyle would be a study of the yamas and niyamas. They are collectively the restraints and observances that an ideal Hindu would try to do and not do.
Feel free to ask as many questions as you like on here, or elsewhere. There is, as you say, an overwhelming amount of information out there. That's partly because Hinduism itself is so vast. Any particular ideas that seem to get your attention?
What I've read so far Hinduism complements my existing beliefs and offers a how to in areas I want to better myself. Compassion for one. Love for everything. Lifecycles. We are Gods. Love is truth. I've just started relearning. It just seems ideal. Every part seems to be already what I believe or know true. I also like the fact that there are people that believe what I do. People seem to have forgot how to live with compassion.
We don't proseltyse. We let people figure it out for themselves, like you are here. 4o years ago I made similar discoveries. Yes, I had beliefs that had come from my own intuition and understanding. Things like growing up on a farm and despising the act of butchering, or hunting. It was only at about age 19 when I started looking around did I even realise there was a religion that matched (more or less) what I had already figured out. Later I chalked it up to being a Hindu soul. Yes we are about bettering ourselves. Character development is one of the hallmarks of all things Hindu. That's what sadhana is ALL about.
I have lots of questions but I have no idea where to start. I started reading the book yo Thank you so much for your help. Theres just so much idk where to start. I started reading the book you recommended. What next?
The book 'What is Hinduism?' Himalayan Academy. That will give you a general overview of all the various schools and sects. But after that I strongly recommend narrowing your studies down, as we're really several religions under one banner, and it will really get confusing (just too many contradictions). Best wishes. Also, if you can, get to a Hindu temple. We;re much more than books.
